Indicated for all types of infection (UTI, Respiratory infections, etc)


Action: Inhibits synthesis of bacterial DNA (stop them from replicating)


NURSING CONSIDERATION:


1. Can cause QT prolongation


2. Can cause potential tendonitis and tendon rupture


3. Decreases effects of phenytoin (long term maintenance to decrease seizures.

Glycopeptide antibiotics; anti- infective

VANCOMYCIN

Indication: Infection; Sepsis


Action: kills bacteria in the intestines


NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:


1. Monitor for ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity (keep an eye on renal labs, BUN, creatinine)


2. Red-man syndrome (if administered too quickly)


3. Administer over at least 60 minutes; central line preferred.

Ends in - CILLIN

PENICILLINS (Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Penicillin)

Indication: infections, skin, respiratory, endocarditis


Action: inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall leading to cell death.


NURSING CONSIDERATION:


1. Monitor for rash.


2. Monitor kidney function. (BUN, Cr)

Ends in - LIMUS

IMMUNOSUPRESSANTS (Tacrolimus, Sirolimus)

Indication: autoimmune disorders, transplant recipients


Action: decreases the activity of the immune system


NURSING CONSIDERATIONS:


1. Makes the client more susceptible to infections


2. Talk to the HCP before receiving vaccinations


3. No grapefruit


4. side effects: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, headaxhe

Helping the body creates antibodies.

VACCINATION

2 categories:


1. Inactivated vaccine - kill version of the germ; may take a series of vaccines. (Hep A, Flu, Polio, Rabies)


2. Live-attenuated vaccination


- weakened portions if that germ that causes the disease.


(MMR, Rotavirus, smallpox, chickenpox, yellow fever)

Administered antibodies for some passive immunity

IMMUNE GLOBULINS (IV IG, RhoGam)

Indication: Immunodeficienct, autoimmune disorders


Action: Passive immunity through antibody administration.


NURSING CONSIDERATION:


1. High risk for a reaction. Common to premedicate with acetaminophen and diphenhydramine


2. Tritrated on slowly (esp in the first infusion)
