Leukocyte

All white blood cells of the immune system

Monocyte

A cell that originates from a myeloid progenitor cell (DC or M)

Antigen presenting cell (APCs)

A cell that functions to present antigens to other cells of the immune system (DCs or M)

These cells phgocytose the pathogen directly and present the foreign antigen on their surface

Phagocytosis

A type of endocytosis where large substances or small organisms (like bacteria) are teken up by the cell

Lymphocyte

Cells that originate from a lymphoid progenitor (T cells, B cells, NKCs)

Humoral

A part of the Adaptive Immune Response

- involved B cells and Abs

- Be cells recognize a pathogen and promt the plasma cells to produce Abs

- Abs can clear the infection by Neutralization, Agglutination or by Compliment Fixation

Cell-Mediated

A part of the Adaptive Immune Response

- involves Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTLs) which recognize MHC I complexes carrying foreign antigens on infected cells

- CTLs kills these infected cells through perforin and granzyme mediated cell lysis

microbe

a microscopic organism (bacteria, fungus, virus...)

pathogen

an organism or virus that causes disease

parasite

an organism that feeds on cell contents, tissues, or body fluids of another species (the host) while in or on the host organism

foreign antigen

a substance that elicits an immune response by binding to B cell receptor, T cell receptors or antibodies

epitope

a small region of an antigen to which a receptor protein or an antibody bind

Antibody (Abs)

a protein secreted by plasma cells that has a "Y" shape and is made of 2 heavy chans + 2 light chains

Abs bind to specific antigens

Abs are also called Immunoglobulins

MHC I

a complex of cell surface proteins that present antigens, found on all cells with a nucleus

MCH II

A complex of cell surface proteins that present antigens

Found ONLY on antigen presenting cells (DC or M)
