Immigrate |
Definition: To come to live permanently in a foreign country Example: Ms. Goodman's ancestors immigrated to America from Russia in the early 1900s. |

Definition: To leave one's country to live permanently in another Example: Jane Doe Smith emigrated from Hedgetopia to the United States. |

Assimilate |
Definition: To become part of a different society, country, etc. Example: Sarah assimilated to the American culture and no longer wore her headscarf. |

Discriminate |
Definition: To treat a person or a group of people differently from other people or groups of people in a bad way Example: Mrs. Meantokids discriminated against the kids in her class who wore glasses and gave them extra homework. |

Persecute |
Definition: To treat someone cruelly or unfairly especially because of their race, religion, etc. Example: The Europeans persecuted the Native Americans and conquered their land. |

Tradition |
Definition: The stories, beliefs, etc. that are part of the culture of a group of people that are passed on from person to person, generation to generation, etc. Example: Our family's Thanksgiving tradition is to go around the table and say what we are thankful for. |

Definition: A careful study of someone or something; an
inspection Example: Many of the immigrants who came through Ellis Island had a physical examination by a nurse or doctor. |

Tenement |
Definition: A run-down and often overcrowded apartment house, especially in a poor section of a large city Example: During the early 1900s, many poor immigrants lived in run-down and overcrowded tenements on the Lower East Side of New York. |

Citizen |
Definition: A person who legally "belongs" to a place or a group of people Example: In February, fourth graders will become citizens of Big Dalton. |

Refugee |
Definition: Someone who is forced to leave their home country because of war or for religious or political reasons Example: Because of the war in South Vietnam, many refugees fled to America. REMEMBER: A refugee is NOT defined as an illegal immigrant.

Visa |
Definition: An official stamp on a passport that allows someone to enter and/or leave a country. Example: When Ben traveled to Canada, he needed a visa to enter the country. REMEMBER: A visa is NOT defined as a type of credit/debit card and is therefore NOT capitalized because it is NOT a proper noun, it's a common noun. |

Culture |
Definition: The beliefs, traditions, arts, etc. of a particular society, group, place, time, etc. Example: It is an important part of the Hedgetopian culture to take your pet hedgehog with you wherever you go. |
