PACS stands for |
picture archiving and communication systems |
PACS is a computer based system for image... |
storage retrieval viewing
what kind of images are stored in PACS |
digital AND analog (analog has to be digitized first |
types of image display monitors |
LCD - liquid crystal display CRT - cathode ray tube |
what does a PACS software do? |
provides tools which allow images to be manipulated including magnification/minification, brightness and contrast, and symbols arrows etc |
what does PACS do? |
allows multiple users to access multiple images in muliple places |
if the PACS is web based... |
it can be accessed from any computer connected to the web |
DICOM stand for and what it does |
digital imaging and communications in medicine it allows info to be created and transmitted between equipment from different manufacturers |
images and equipment must be ______________________ compatible |
DICOM |
DICOM query/retrieve |
initiates a search for a specific image of a unique patient |
DICOM get worklist |
imports patient info from the system |
DICOM send |
conveys image data to the network from a compliant system |
DICOM print |
sends info to another DICOM compliant device which can print a hardcopynfori |
DICOM header includes |
patient info, date, time study info (type of exam) size of file, type of equipment |
types of PACS devices |
SCU SCP SCU/SCP |
SCU |
service class user acts like workstation |
SCP |
service class provider acts as a server to provide service to the client, work station or user |
clinical workstation |
monitors have resolution of less than 2048 x 2560 privilege level is limited to level of therapists |
diagnostic work station |
monitors resolution is higher than 2048x2560 pixels used for radiologists interpreting images |
types of pAC workstations |
clinical diagnostic work stations |
an xray image can be up to what size |
5MB |
size of CT exams |
15-25 MB |
size of MRI exams images |
10-15 MB |
redundant distant storage Redundant define |
storing data in multiple locations |
redundant distant storage distant -define |
storing data at sites other than where its originated from |
importance of redundancy |
useful for regaining images after equipment failures or natural disasters |
type of PACS storage devices |
image acquisition modality workstation clinical workstation diagnostic workstation RAID Jukebox |
Image acquisition modality workstation |
it is the equipment that acquires the patient exam ex: CT, MR, flat panel detector size of hard drive is limited so images must be deleted to make room for new images can store images for 4 days |
clinical workstation |
can be the same unit as an image acquisition workstation or can be separate unit which supports multiple image acquisition workstations
area where technologists prepare and manipulate images before they are sent to the radiologist have larger storage capacity than image acquisition work station can store images for 5 days |
Diagnostic workstation |
larger capacity than image acquisition and clinical workstations stores up to one weeks worth of patient image |
RAID |
redundant array of inexpensive/independent disks used for "near term" storage. images which will be needed in the near future
series of connected hard drives that store images. Images are stored on multiple drives and serve as backup
stores info for up to 6 months |
Jukebox |
largest storage device can take 2-5 min to access an image ind. media devices rest in slots like records/ cd's in a jukebox when image is needed, a arm grabs the correct data device and places it on a drive |
PACS network -three types of interactions |
workstations - installed throughout medical center, which people with PACS privilege can access. fairly detailed knowledge of PACS software and operating system is necessary
PACS viewing system - computers wiht PACS viewing software are scattered throughout a facility. Data manipulation is limited, but viewing opportunities are increased. Less PACS knowledge required
Integrated PACS with the EMR - images become part of the chart and are opening with a click of the mouse. no PACS training necessary |
Two types of PAC networks |
LAN - local area network limited to area less than 0.5 miles share one server
WAN - wide area network covers large area more than 0.5 miles uses telophones or cable company to transmit data slower data transfer rates |
wireless PACS |
wireless routers or bluetooth technology provide access to PACS images |
