List the mechanism of fever
Exogenous pyrogens (e.g. bacterial products)

-> Stimulates release of endogenous pyrogens (e.g. IL-1, TNF α) from leukocytes

->Increased cyclooxygenase (COX) activity = prostaglandin production

-> Hypothalamus: Prostaglandins (esp. PGE2) stim. H to raise temp set point

-> Heat conservation and production
What are pyrogens?
Anything that causes a fever
Apart from endo. pyrogens, what also stimulates cyclooxygenase (COX) activity (i.e. production of prostaglandins)?
NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
What are somem endogenous pyrogens?
Interleukin-1, Tumour Necrosis Factor α.
List mechanisms of heat conservation and production
Skin vasoconstriction,
piloerection (goose bumps),
shivering,
adenergetic effects including raised metabolism
Heat-seeking behaviour (warm clothes and drink)
