If you give someone food for thought, you make them think hard.

A gut feeling.


=A gut instinct=A gut reaction


(They are all the same. )


Instinct=حس/حدس/غريزة/على السليقة


Gut=امعاء/حدس

A feeling or a reaction that happens fast without reasons.



Examples


➡Jack had a gut feeling that Sarah was lying.

شعور/احساس داخلي أو حدس

Lose the plot.

If someone loses the plot, they become confused or crazy or no longer how to deal with a situation.



Examples


➡Vicky works so many hours that she started losing the plot. She is making mistakes and keep falling asleep on the job.

Plot=plan or story


أو سير الأحداث(الحبكة القصصية أو السيناريو )


بمعنى فقد التركيز او السيطرة على مجريات الأمور.

Miles away.

If someone is miles away, they are completely unaware of what is happening because they are thinking deeply about something else.



Examples


➡You didn't hear a word I said, did you? You were miles away.

A mind like a sieve.

If you have a mind like a sieve or a brain like a sieve you have a bad memory and often forget things.



Examples


➡He lost his keys again. He has got a mind like a sieve.

Sieve=غربال/منخل/مشن(مصفى)

Off the top of your head.

If you comment on something off the top of your head, what you are about to say is not thought of previously. You haven't thought of it before saying it and it might not be correct.



Example


A) How much does a house in Cairo cost?.


B) Off the top of my head, I'd say about 50000$.

Informal-British

If you say that someone is off their head or out of their head, you mean that they are very strange or foolish.



Example


➡You must be off your head you continue living in this very expensive city after losing your job.

تفكير غريب أو أحمق

On the tip of your tongue.


Tip=طرف

It has two meanings:


The first one is


1) if a question or a comment on the tip of your tongue, you want to say it, but you stop yourself.


Example


It was on the tip of my tongue to tell her that I saw him with another girl, but I said nothing.



The second one is


2) If a word or a name or an answer is on the tip of your tongue, you know it and you almost remember it , you just don't .


Example


Do you remember that guy who gave us the tickets? Oh, what was his name? Oh, it is on the tip of my tongue! That's annoying, why can't I remember his name ?

معنيان


الأول عندما يكون هناك سؤال أو تعليق على طرف لسانك وتريد أن تقوله ولكنك لم تفعل.



الثاني عندما يكون هناك كلمة أو اسم أو إجابة على طرف لسانك وتعرفها أو تكاد تتذكرها ولكن دون جدوى.

Out of your mind.(American)


= off your head (British)

If you say that someone is out of their mind you mean that they are very stupid.(informal idiom).



Example


You spent five hundred dollars on a jacket. Are you out of your mind?

Out of their mind with worry


Out of their mind with boredom


Out of their mind with...

Out of their mind with worry= they are extremely worried. Out of their mind with boredom = to be extremely bored.



Out of your mind with ...= to feel something strongly.


Example


She is out of her mind with worry, she hasn't seen her husband in days.


Or


She is going out of her mind with worry, she hasn't seen her husband in days.

ان تشعر بشيء ما(قلق/ملل) بقوة

Rack your brain/brains.


Rack=Wrack (old fashion).

If you rack your brain, you think very hard about something or try very hard to remember it.


Example


➡They asked me for fresh ideas, so I racked my brain for the whole day.


➡Bob racked his brain trying to remember where he had put his keys.


عصر ذهنه في التفكير أو محاولة تذكر شيء ما

Ring a bell.

If something rings a bell, it is slightly familiar to you and you know you have heard it before , but you don't remember it fully.


Example


The name rings a bell, but I can't remember where I have heard it.
