What is a theory?

A well established set of principles that have been developed and tested repeatedly with evidence to support the claim.
Name the five basic components of a plant or animal cell

Nucleus

Cytoplasm

Cell membrane

Mitochondria

Ribosomes

What is Cell Theory? What are it's conditions?

- All living organisms are composed of one or more cells

- Cells are the smallest unit of live

- All cells are made of pre-existing cells.

What are the exceptions to Cell Theory?

Giant Algae:

Unicellular. Up to 100m in diameter.

Striated Muscle Cell:

Fibres that are up to 300mm in diameter. Are multinucleated.

Aseptate fungal Hyphae:

Multinucleated. Have a continuous cytoplasm - one long hyphae.

What are the seven functions of life?

Metabolism

Growth

Reproduction

Response

Homeostatis

Nutrition

Excretion

Define Metabolism

A set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms that are catalysed by enzymes. Includes all the chemical reactions that occur within an organism
Define Growth

May be limited but is evident in one way or another. Calls can convert energy from one form or another.

Define Reproduction

Involves hereditary molecules that can be passed on to offspring

Define Response

By responding to stimuli, an organism learns to adapt to an environment.

Define Homeostatis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment but controlling a fluctuation temperature or acid base levels.
