Hyoid Muscles - action and reason
assist in the actions of mastification and chewing
Hyoid Muscle - location
Superficial area of the neck (i.e. they are located close to the skin)
Hyoid Muscles -overview
A group of muscles located superficially in the neck (assist with chewing and swallowing). The hyoid muscles are grouped according to position (supeahyoid - high or infrahyoid - low) and if they are anterior (infront) or posterior (behind) the hyoid bone.
Hyoid Bone
located in the upper area of the neck. Bone runs horizontal across the neck muscles. All the hyoid muscles (whether suprahyoid or infrahyoid) are attached to the bone.
-Hyoid bone does not articulate (touch) any other bone, only ligaments or muscles (hyoid muscles)
Suprahyoid Bones (4)
Staylohyoid, Geniohoid, Mylohyoid, Digastric

STAY(staylohid) DIGGING(diagastric) MY (Mylohyoid) GENNY (geniodhoid)
Infrahyoid Bones (4)
Thyrohoid, Sternothyroid, Sternohyoid, Omonhyoid

Suprahyoid Bones
located superior (above) the hyoid bone
-divided into anterior or posterior posistion
-
Anterior Suprahyoid Bone
-at the front of the neck and above the hyoid bone
-Mylohoid, Geniohyoid
-MY GENNY IS ABOVE AND AT THE FRONT
Geniohoid - overview
Suprahoid (above hyoid bone)
-Anterior (at the front)
-Insertion: hyoid bone (most active spot)
-Origin: genial tubercles (least active)
Suprahyoid bones
-located above the hyoid bone
-both anterior (above and front) and posterior (above and back) cause elevation in the hyoid bone and larynx
Posterior Suprahyoid Bones
-located above the hyoid bone and at the back area of the neck
-required for lifting the hyoid and larynx
Anterior Suprahyoid Bones
Located above the hyoid bone and to the back
-required for lifting the hyoid and larynx
-also, depresses the mandible jaws to open
Digastric Muscles
Anteior Suprahyoid
-two origins and insertions
-origin: intermeditate tendon and mastoid of temporal bone
-insertion: medial surface of mandible, intermediate tendon
Digastric Muscle - action
-Suprahyoid Anterior muscle therefore it is required for raising the hyoid bone and support during swallowing
Mylohoid -overview
Anterior suprahyoid muscle
-insertion: hyoid bone
-origin: mylohoid bone of the mandible
Mylohoid bone action
Located in anterior suprahyoid
-therefore it raises hyoid bone
-also, elevates tongue
Geniohyoid Muscle -action
shortens the floor of the mouth and widens the pharynx during swallowing
Stylohyoid Muscle overview
Staying digging my Genny
-therefore located in the suprahyoid (anterior)
-origin: styloid process of temporal bone
-insertion: hyoid bone
Stylohyoid Muscle action
elongates the floor of the mouth
Two muscles that change the length of the floor of the mouth
1) stylohid - elgonates floor of the mouth (increases length)
2)geniohyoid - shortens floor of mouth
Posterior Suprahyoid Muscle
STAY DIGGING
Staylohoid, Diagastric Muscles
Infrahyoid Muscles
located below the hyoid bone (inferior - below)
-4 muscles
-makes up the words TOSS
Infrahyoid Muscles
-MOST depress the hyoid bone (lowers the hyoid bone)
Sternothyroid Muscle
-located below (infra) to the hyoid bone
origin: sternum
insertion: thyroid cartilage
Sternothyroid Muscle - ACTION
DOES NOT DEPRESS THE HYOID BONE (only one that does not depress hyoid and is located below hyoid bone)
-depress the thyroid and larynx
Sternohyoid Muscle
-infrahyoid (located below the hyoid bone)
origin: posterior and superior surfaces of sternum
insertion: body of hyoid
Sternohyoid Muscle - action
DEPRESSES the hyoid bone
Omohyoid Bone - action
DEPRESSES the hyoid bone and retracts hyoid when speaking
Omohyoid Bone - overview
infrahyoid (located below the hyoid bone -TOSS)
-origin: scapula and inferior belly
-insertion: superior belly and body of hyoid
Thyrohyoid -overview
-origin: thyroid cartilage
-insertion: body and greater hyoid
Thyrhoid -actoin
DEPRESSES the hyoid bone
-raises thyroid and larynx
