the saving righteousness of Christ as the grounds of justification, though these verses do teach that Adam’s sin had a great effect on the human race.
Explanation of Romans 5:18-19 Verses prior to Romans 5:18
Paul thinks he has sufficiently discharged his duty of showing everyone's guilt and corruption before God. The Gospel is the revelation of the saving righteousness of God.

Three main views of original sin
Pelagianism, Arminianism, and Calvinism
Pelagianism on original sin
4th c. Irish monk Pelagius strongly emphasized free will – man is capable on his own of fulfilling God’s commands, we are not born sinners, no special grace is needed. Adam was a bad example.
Arminianism on original sin
holds that all men are corrupted by Adam’s sin and thus in need of God’s prevenient, or preparing grace to enable a proper response.
Prevenient grace two views
limited/efficacious, and universal
Arminianism holds we need this in order to believe
prevenient grace
Calvinism on original sin
holds that prevenient grace is particular, definite, and limited. Because it is efficacious -- it accomplishes God's goal -- it actually brings people to salvation.
Two Calvinistic views of original sin
Representative (Federal Headship) and Realism (Natural Headship) views
Realism (Natural Headship) view of original sin says
we were really there in Adam, in seed form, and there is therefore real transmission of guilt.
Representative (Federal Headship) view of original sin says
there is a representative union between Adam and his posterity and an imputation of Adam's sin to the race.
Mediate Imputation
as a result of Adam's sin, human beings are born with a corrupt nature, CORRUPTION is the cause of the guilt.
In mediate imputation we’re born with ________ which causes ________
corruption, guilt
Immediate Imputation
Adam's sin is imputed to the human race, resulting in condemnation for the race - alien guilt. As a consequence, human beings are born with a corrupt nature. The GUILT is the cause of the corruption or pollution.
In immediate imputation we’re born with ________ which causes _________
guilt, corruption

Overview of strengths of immediate imputation
1) biblical presentation of Adam 2) implied in other passages 3) Romans 5 4) allows us to see why only Adam’s first sin was imputed to us 5) explains
Expansion of strength of immediate imputation’s presentation of Adam
Immediate imputation is implied in our estate, born spiritually dead and evidently under a curse. This is evidenced in Ephesians 2. We were either tried in Adam and fell or we have been condemned without a trial. We are either under a curse for Adam's guilt or for no guilt at all. Immediate imputation explains most satisfactorily that which is ultimately mystery.
The only passage that deals with original sin in any detail
Romans 5:12-19
Expansion of strength of immediate imputation implied in other passages
Psalm 51 David laments that "I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me."
Expansion of strength of immediate imputation in Romans 5
This view alone emphasizes what seems to have been the governing principle of the apostle's argument. Adam and Christ are representatives of their respective races. Romans 5 teaches that this representation works in two ways. It explains the condemnation of the race in Adam and it accounts for the justification of believers in Christ. The two are bound together by the apostle and I receive them as such.
