Galileo attemps to reconcile scripture and science
|
. Letter to the Grand Duchess Christina (Galileo’s reconciliation of science and scripture)
1) Essential ideas a) God “made” science and scripture b) God would not make them to be in contradiction with one another c) Therefore, science and scripture must be compatible d) To see how they are compatible, first consider that the purpose of scripture is salvation (Galielo’s way of putting it). e) Second, consider that the purpose of scripture is to show “how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go” f) So, the language of scripture is for ordinary folk, so-called “lay” language, not for scientists g) So, in scripture one will find such expressions as “the sun rises” and just as now we don’t regard them as foolish things to say, even though we know the science, so then, Galileo alleged that there is no good reason to take saying such things as in conflict with science |
