Occupational Health and Safety
OH&S is the identification, evaluation, and control of hazards associated with the work environment. Includes chemical, biological, physical agents and psycho social disorders such as stress
Health Hazards
- Physical agents: ex. noise, temperature, lightning, radiation
- Biological agents: parasites, bacteria, insects, viruses
- Chemical agents: toxic substances
- Ergonomic: repetitive strain, stress, fatigue, back injury

Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee Responsabilities
- Meet at least once a month
- To ensure adequate records are kept regarding accidents and health hazards
- To investigate and resolve complaints by employees
- To participate in investigations of health and safety related injuries
-Regularly monitor health and safety programs
- Monitor records of injuries and illnesses
- Cooperate with safety officers investigating a complaint
- Develop, establish and promote health and safety programs and procedures
- Obtain information from the employer and government agencies concerning existing or potential hazards in the workplace
Hazardous Products Act
Federal act to protect consumers by regulating the sale of dangerous products
Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS)
- Law requiring labels on all hazardous products and a Material safety data sheet on each product
- HPA also requires that an employer provide training
Bill C-45; The "Westray Bill"
- Ramifications for failure to provide a safe work environment have become more serious following Bill C-45
- Employers can be sent to jail
Workplace stress
The harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen, at least in part, when there is a conflict between job demands of the employee and the amount of control the employee has over meeting those demands
