Sun Yat-sen
Father of Chinese Revolution (1911). Wanted to unify China: emphasized nationality, democracy.
Yuan Shikai
Sun Yatsen bows out in favor of Shikai. Controls the #1 military organization in China, becomes Emperor. His death ends the Manchu Era, brings in the Warlord Period.

President at the time of the 21 demands (with Shigenobu as PM).
Jiang Jieshi (Ch'iang K'ai-shek)
Leader of nationalist Party in China (KMT). Replaced Sun in 1925.
Zhang Zoulin (1873-1928)
Took over Beijing, removed by Wu Peifu, who is soon overthrown. Beijing given back to Zoulin, Japanese military intervene to grant him autonomy.

1928: Jpn warlord wants to gain Manchuria, the Jpn general blows up Zhang Zoulin's train.l.
Zhang Xue-liang
Zhang Zoulin's son. Ruler of Manchuria after Zoulin's death. Instigated Xi'an Incident, placed under house arrest by Kaishek for 50 years.
Henry Pu-Yi
"Last emperor" of the Qing Dynasty. Becomes Emperor of Manchukuo (puppet state) by Empire of Japan, rules until the 2nd Sino-Japanese War.
Zhou Enlai
2nd most important in Communist history. Founded CCP in France, returns to China and joins Mao.

When meeting with Xueliang, has a chance to shoot Kaishek, misses the chance! Dumb luck.
Emperor Meiji (1852-1912)
Emperor during the Meiji Restoration. 122nd Emperor.
Emperor Taisho (1879-1926)
Son of Emperor Meiji. 123rd Emperor of Japan. Known for physical difficulties, weakness allowed manipulation by the genro clique.
Emperor Showa
124th Emperor of Japan. Succeeded Taisho, headed military imperialist reign of Japan. Known as Hirohito, not prosecuted for War Crimes (to pacify all of Japan).

62 years of rule- longest ever. = 20th century

Current Emperor: Prince Akihito. 125th Emperor.
Okuma Shigenobu
8th and 17th Prime Minister of Japan. Founder of Waseda University.
PM at time of 21 Demands (with Yuan Shikai as President). Known for active foreign policy.
Hara Takashi
19th PM of Japan. Elected member of the legislature.
Tanaka Giichi
Head of the Seiyukai. 26th PM. Two tasks: solve economic crisis, rectify soft foreign policy.

Aggressive foreign policy and stance toward China, combated "dangerous thought."
Hashimoto Kingoro
Militarist Colonel. Desired expansion for Japan. Planned March Incident and October Incident.

Formed Sakura Kai (political reform by getting rid of parties).
Araki Sadao
General. Served as war minister. Leader (with Mazaki) of radical Army group, Kodo-ha [Imperial Way Faction]. Supported Japanese traditions, USSR as primary enemy.
Inukai Tsuyoshi
PM of Japan 1931. Set out to curb army actions in Manchuria. Extremists assassinate Inukai.

IMPORTANCE: Marked the end of Party gov't and the beginning of military dominance.
Nagata Tetsuzan
General in the Imperial Army and founder of "Total War" Theory. Executed by Saburo Aizawa ("Aizawa Incident"), brings in era of Control Faction in army.
Tojo Hideki
General in Imperial Army. 40th PM during WWII. Directly responsible for Pearl Harbor, which brought Japan into war with the U.S.

Sentenced to death for war crimes.
Saionji Kinmochi
Emperor's advisor and the last surviving genro. Very close to Okada assassination.
Prince Konoe Fumimaru
(34, 38, 39) PM in 1937 leading up to WWII. Close relative of the emperor and tool of the military.
Yamamoto Isoroku
Admiral during Pacific War. Developed new technology which allowed torpedoes to operate in shallow water. Planned Pearl Harbor and Midway.

Assassinated.

Hungarian theoretical physicist. Father of the Hydrogen bomb. Early member of the Manhattan Project.
J. Robert Oppenheimer
American theoretical physicist. Father of the atomic bomb, but then becomes great advocate of not using it.
Leslie Groves
Directed the Manhattan Project. US Army corp of Engineers.
