4 Compartments of the Neck
-Visceral Part
-Vertebral Part
-3 &4: Lateral Compartments that contain major blood vessels and the vagus nerve
Superficial Cervical Fascia
-Thin layer of subcutaneous connective tissue that separates the overlying dermis of the skin from the underlying deep cervical fascia
-Envelopes the platysma muscle (innervated by the fascial nerve, VII, small neurovascular bundles, lymphatics, and variable amounts of fat
Deep Cervical Fascia (3)
-3 Fascial Layers
1. Investing Fascia
2. Prevertebral Fascia
3. Pretracheal Fascia
Investing Fascia
-Completely surrounds the neck and encloses the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles
-It is pierced by the anterior and external jugular veins and by cutanous nerves from the cervical plexus
Prevertebral Fascia
-Surroudsn the vertebral column and associated muscles
Pretracheal fascia
-A collection of fascias that surround the trachea, esophogus and thryoid gland
-Anteriorly, it separates the infrahyoid muscles for the deeper trachea an thyroid gland
-Posteriorly, the buccopharyngel fascia separates the pharyns and esophogus from the prevertebral layer
-Extends interiorly into the thorax
Carotid Sheath
-A column of fascia that surrounds the common and internal carotid arteries, the internal jugular and the vagus nerve
Superficial veins eventually drain into the ______ and ____ ____ system of veins ad then the ______ ____ ___ and _____ ____ .
-External and Internal Jugular
-Superior Vena Cava
-Right Atrium of Heart
The tissues of the anterior and posterior triangles of the neck are supplied by branches of the ____ ___ ___ and by the _____ ___ from the _______ artery.
-External Carotid Artery
-Thyrocervical trunk
-Subclavian Artery
Where is the cervical plexus of nerves formed by and located?
-Formed by ventral rami of the first four cervical nerves (C1-C4) and lies deep to the internal jugular vein and sternocleidomastoid muscle
The _____ ____ provides the motor innervation to the "strap" muscles.
-Ansa Cervicalis
Where does all the lymph from the head and neck eventually drain to?
-Deep Cervical Lymph Nodes (lie along the internal jugular vein)
Examples of Deep Cervical Nodes
-Jugulodigastric and Juguloomohyoid
On the right side, the deep cervical chain drains into the ____ _____ __ and on the left side into the _____ ____.
-Right Lymphatic Duct
-Thoracic Duct
Boundaries of Anterior Triangle
-Anterior Border of Sternocleidomastoid muscle
-Inferior Border of the Mandible
-Midline of the neck
Boundaries of the Posterior Triangle
-Posterior Border of the Sternocleidomastioid muscle
-Anterior Border of the trapezius
-Middle third of the clavicle
