Bed Count
Number of available hospital inpatient beds on a given day
• For Inpatient use/not out patient
• Doesn’t matter if occupied or vacant
• set up for normal use: set up, staffed, equipped
• Hospital level or patient care unit level
Bed Count Days
unit of measure denoting the presence of one inpatient bed set up and staffed for use in a 24 hr period
Total bed count days- sum of inpatient bed count days for e/ of the days in a specific period of time
Bed Occupancy Ratio/Percentage
Proportion of beds occupied defined as the ratio of inpatient service days to bed count days in a specific period of time

LOS
Length of Stay:number of calendar days a patient stays in a hospital from the time of admission to the time of discharge
• Subtract admission date from discharge date when patient is admitted and discharged in the same month

• For longer stays (beyond month) days must be added to calculate LOS
Total LOS
Sum of the days a stay of any group of inpatients discharge during a specific period of time
Average LOS
avg number of days that inpatient discharged during a specific period of time
