Step 1: perform bedside basics

Knock to enter room


Introduce yourself


Ask patients name/allergies then confirm with wristband


Perform environmental check


See if breaks/oxygen/suction/etc work


Remove any clutter that could cause tripping hazard


Ask patient consent to perform procedure

Getting patient from bed to wheelchair

Ask patient if they’re in any pain or need to void


Lift head of bed to 30 degrees and bed to height where patient can have feet comfortably on the ground when sitting


Turn patient on their side by pulling them towards you by placing your hands on their shoulder and hips


Have patient grip rail with strong side


Encourage patient to sit up, if they’re unable use swinging motion with arm under their knees and neck to get them in sitting position


Have patient wiggle their toes and ask if they feel any dizziness or light headedness


If they feel dizzy/light headed wait one minute


Place footwear on patient to reduce slipping and falling


Have patient grab your shoulders and grab patients waist, rock back and forth a couple times to gain momentum to get patient in standing position. Brace their weak side with both your legs on either side of their weak one


Pivot patient towards the wheelchair that’s at a 45 degree angle to their strong side next to the bed


When patient feels chair on back of their legs have them grab the armrest with the strong side


Have them slowly sit down into the chair


Ask them if they feel okay


Attach foot pedals and place their feet on them, check the room for clutter and exit the room with the patient to their destination
