What is the mains supply stop valve called? (found at the road side outside your property)
Supply company stop valve
What is a combination stop key?
It is the key used to stop the mains water supply to the property (road side)
What is the usual size of the water mains supply at the road side?
100 mm
What is the name of the mains supply pipe that comes to the property?
Service pipe
What is the valve (stops water) called that is attached to the service pipe on entry to the home? and what is it's function?
Stop valve - and when used it stops the flow of water to the home to allow repair and maintenance to pipe work
What pressure is the mains water feed from the road? High or low
High (usually)
Where/in what will you find the Supply Company Stop Valve?
In a pipe guard
Supply stop Valve - how do you turn off a metre controlled water supply?
The metre will have an incorperated key to stop the water
What problem can you have with a Stop-valve guard pipe? How would you clean it? How would you test the stop-valve?
Stop-valve guard pipes tend to fill up with mud and grit, operating the valve becomes difficult. Once a year,
clean it out using an old tablespoon taped firmly to a long garden cane. Use a combination stop valve key to
ensure the valve operates correctly and smoothly
In older properties or flat what can a Stop Valve do?
It may control the water to more than one property via the rising mains pipe
If a Stop Valve controls more than one property what must you do? and Why?
You must notify the owners of the other property as you may be liable for damage to water systems/heating systems etc
Where do you find Stop Valves for the home? (name 5)
Under the sink/road side/cloakrooms/under trap doors/in basements
What build up do you get in a Stop Valve? How do you clear it? What do you do if it leaks?
lime will build up inside the valve - you need to shut off and open three times once a year if it starts to leak change the washer
If there is only one Stop-valve at the road side (& no stop valve in the property)what would be advisable to do?
Fit a Stop-valve in side the home for ease in an emergency
Where do you find the Stop-valve in a multi-building? (name 3)
On the ground floor - on the dwelling floor or in the flat
How many types of water supply are there? (name 2)
Indirect and direct supplies
What does a DIRRECT WATER SUPPLY allow?
It allows the cold water supply to the cold taps to be taken from the rising mains.....
What is a CHECK VALVE and why is it fitted to the rising mains? (name 2)
It stops the water returning to the rising mains of the property and reduces the risk of water contamination
Dirrect water supply systems do not have a heating coil inside the """""?
The hot water cylinder
Which boiler (system) requires the hot water cylinder and sorage tank from the loft to be removed when fitted to the property?
Combi boilers
Some dirrect boilers have a safety valve fitted - Why?
They work under mains pressure (the system is known to leak)
What devices are modern boilers fitted with to comply with the water supply by-laws? (name 2)
Anti-syphon and Back Flow devices
What is the coil called inside a hot water tank? (name 2)
Heat exchanger or Calorifier
Combi boliers can be fitted when the water pressure is? - A-Adequate b-low c-high (there may be more than one correct answer)
A and C
Running a combi boil can produce what fault? Why?
Leaks due to the high pressure
A check valve must be fitted to a toilet system, why?
To stop the return flow of the water and to reduce contamination to the water system
Indirect water system - where do they get their cold water supply from?
The cold water tank in the loft
Indirect water supply - where is the only drinking water supply found in the property?
At the kitchen
If there was a leak in an INDIRECT WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM would it be a greater or lesser leak than a DIRRECT WATER SYSTEM? what was your reason for your choice?
A dirrect water system works under higher pressure, so the water loss from a leak would be greater
Pump boosted showers - what water system CAN they be used on?
Indirrect water systems
What problems will a direct water system have durring winter?
Frosting of pipes and leaks due to iced/burst pipes
Water regs have insisted on a kit to be fitted - where and for what reason?
Kits are to be fitted to the water tank to prevent contamination and to make water drinkable
Indirect system - the boiler feed out - on what pipe does the pump get fitted to? and what does it pump/feed to?
Hot water feeds out of boiler, fit the pump to the flow (inward), this pumps to the heat exchange in the hot water tank and to the radiators
What 2 two valves are on a radator? One valve has a main purpose, which one and what purpose?
Handwheel valve and lockshield valve to control the temperature
Old hot water systems - how does the hot water tank get it's hot water? explain the process
The hot water cylinder is gavity fed from the water tank in the loft, the tank water is drawn down (from the bottom) to the boiler and then back (flow) to the hot water cylinder (top)
Old direct hot water system - why are they inefficient and what usually goes wrong and why?
Pipes clog with lime scale, you can not fit central heating as there is a dirrect feed to the hot water cylinder.
Modern Direct hot water systems - what do they do?
The boiler can heat water dirrect to the property and also operate central heating.
combi - when you run a bath what problem do you have?
If the tap is a long way from the boiler the flow will be slow - also you would get alot of cold water before hot water gets to the tap
Indirect hot water system - how does it work?
Cold water is gravity fed from the storage tank in the loft to the bottom of the cylinder, inside the cylinder is the heat exchange/calorifier connected to the boiler by a feed and return pipe for cooler water - the primary circuit
Heating water with a primary circuit - what does it prevent build up of?
Lime scale
How is a primary circuit filled?
It is filled by the header tank/expansion tank in the loft - the pump inline draws the water into the circuit (can be gravity fed)
