What are the 3 main points in the British standard on hydrants?

65mm round thread outlet to enable standpipe to be attached

Minimum water flow of 2000 litres per minute minimum pressure of 1.7 bar, with water flowing

Anti clockwise opening

Where does water in hydrants come from? And how much does it cost?

Normal mains water supply (just like taps)

Originates from reservoirs then goes to treatment plants, pumping stations, trunk mains and service mains.

It uses gravity then pumping stations

It is free

What equipment makes up the hydrant gear?

Double headed stand pipe

Hydrant bar

Hydrant key

Name parts of the double headed standpipe?

Pressure release lug

Double headed outlet

Instantaneous coupling

Standpipe shaft

Blank cap

What is the difference between hard suction and lay flat?

Hard suction is designed to withstand external atmospheric pressure

Lay flat hose is designed to withstand internal atmospheric pressure

How do you secure a hose to a ladder?

Use hose becket, personal line and round turn two half hitches or hose can be carried aloft then tied using a long line

Only one long line per ladder and should be left to the side against a string

How to haul aloft a hose (carrying it up the ladder)?

Placed under No1s arm and then over their back and the side on which they will dismount is the opposite side to which the branch will be carried

Must be in control at the bottom to then go up

What are the two methods of controlling the hose at the bottom of the ladder?

Person footing the ladder can feed it through with one hand

Or

Someone can stand behind and feed it through hand over hand about one pace behind the footer

How carrying a hose reel up a ladder differs from a normal main jet?

An overhand knot is done in the hose reel to prevent it slipping off

What are all hydrants used today called?

Screw down hydrants

Different types of leak detection devices for hydrants?

Magnetic and screw on

When do hydrants get tested?

Yearly visually and every 4 years fully

Between April and September but can also be October

Rules of care and repair for hoses?

Hose should be ramped when laid across roads

Should not be kinked when under pressure

Should Not be made up frozen

Should be underrun and cleaned before being stowed

Hose identification for the areas? Bandit strap?

Orange- eastern

Yellow- southern

Green- western

Black- training centres

What couplings are used for 45-70mm hose?

Instantaneous couplings

Requirements of a good hose?

Reliable in use

Resistant to bursting, leaking, chemical damage or kinking when passing around bends/corners

Not stretch 5% in length and 10% in diameter

Light and easy to handle and able to be made up wet or dry

Durable- resistant to abrasion and easy to repair

Smooth surfaced internally to minimise frictional loss

Capable of withstanding pressure changes and shock

Two different types of female couplings?

Pressure release instantaneous coupling (1 knob)

Two pull release couplings (fitted on hoses)

Storz couplings why are they used for?

90 & 150mm hose and also the 90mm adaptor kit (changes stir couplings to normal instantaneous ones)

How to clean a hose?

Broom and cold water should be enough but can use lukewarm soapy water and if not then send it off to be cleaned

What hoses can be used for soft suction?

70mm and 90mm and 150mm

Rosenbauer project 2 what is its working pressure range and lpm?

Between 3.5-7bar and can throw 57m at 7 bar can produce a solid jet at 630lpm or max flow rate 930lpm with jet/spray combo

Specs of delta attack 400/500/ RB101?

Pistol grip handle

Stirrup handle on off

Flow rate control ring

Spinning teeth

Pattern adjustment collar

Effective operation for pulse sprays

130,230,300,400 lpm

Working pressure 6 bar but will still work effectively down to 3 bar

Hose reels specs?

Yellow

18m long

1 drum on each side of appliance

4 lengths on each side

Connected via Mac Donald couplings

22mm internal bore

Delta attack 100 is the branch

Flow settings- 50 100 150 and 230lpm
