Hyperthyroidism - Autoimmune disease where antibodies stimulate TSH receptors to produce T3 + T4 in excess. (results: Low T3 and High TSH).
Swollen legs, bulging eyes, hair loss, diarrhoea
Hashimotos Thyroiditis
Hypothyroidism - destructive autoimmune disease. Thyroid gland infiltrated by lymphocytes enlarging thyroid (goitre).
Thyroid destroyed.
Constipation, bradycardia, amenorrhoea
Conn's Syndrome
Hyperaldosteronism - adenoma of zona glomerulosa. Increased sodium + water retention (Increased blood pressure). Secondary hypertension.
Cushings Syndrome
Excess Cortisol. From disorder in Ant. Pituitary or Adrenal Cortex. Excess production of glucocorticosteriods.
Obesity, hypertension, ankle oedema, glucose intolerance, peptic ulceration.
Addisons Disease
Insufficiency of Adrenal Cortex.
Deficient secretion of mineral and glucocorticoids.
From progressive destruction of adrenal cortex (either tumour, autoimmune or infection)
Postural Hypotension, Weight loss, Constipation
Phaeochromocytomas
Increased stimulation of Adrenal Medulla.
Excess NE/E produced by catecholamine-producing cells in adrenal medulla.
Hypertension, headaches, can lead to heart failure.
Test for free metanephrines.
