What is a virus?
a microscopic particle made of either a DNA or an RNA core and covered with a protein coat; it infects host cells in order to reproduce
What is a host cell?
a living cell in which a virus reproduces.
What is a vaccine?
a solution made from damaged virus or bacteria particles or from killed or weakened viruses or bacteria; can prevent but not cure many viral and bacterial diseases.
What is AIDS?
acquired immune deficiency syndrome. A fatal communicable disease caused by HIVS.
What is a compound light microscope?
an instrument that uses light and convex lenses to magnify objects.
What is an electron microscope?
an instrument that bends beams of electrons in a magnetic field.
What is cell theory?
a major theory of life science. The cell is a basic unit of life.
What is a cell membrane?
the selectively permable outer boundry of a cell that allows food and oxygen to move into the cell and waits to leave it.
What is a nucleus?
The structure inside a cell that directs the cell's activities.
What is a chromatin?
hereditary material in a cell's nucleus.
What is a cytoplasm?
the gel like substance inside the cell membrane that contains structures that carry out life processes.
What is an orgenelle?
in eukaryotic cells, the structures within the cytoplasm that breaks down food.
What is endoplasmic reticulum?
a cell organelle consisting of folded membranes that move materials around the cells.
What is ribosome?
a cell organelle on which protein is made.
What is a golgi body?
cell organelles consisting of stacks or membrane-covered sacks that package and move proteins to the outside of the shell.
What is mitochondria?
cell organelles that break down food molecules and release energy.
What is lysome?
a cytoplasmic organelle that contains chemicals and digests wastes and worn out cell parts.
What is cholorplast?
plant cell organelles in which light energy is changed into chemical energy in the form of sugar during photosnythesis.
What is a cell wall?
in plants, the ridgid structure made of cellulose.
What is tissue?
group of similar cells that do the same sort of work.
What is an organ?
a structure made up of different types of tissues that work together.
