acute HIV infection
the 4-7 week period of rapid viral replication immediately after exposure to the virus, characterized by fever, malaise and flulike symptoms
AIDS enteropathy
changes in small and large bowel thought to be attributable to direct HIV infection wit no other identifiable pathogen; manifested as chronic diarrhea and possibly malabsorption
ART
antiretroviral therapy combination of meds used to kill or suppress viral replication and progression of HIV disease; also called highly active antiretroviral therapy
CD4+ cells
T helper lymphocyte cells
constitutional disease
affecting the whole functioning make up of body such as with HIV infection; persistent fever, night sweats, chronic or intermittent fatigue, malaise, diarrhea of unknown etiology

viral load testing
measurement of quantity of HIV RNA (free virus) in the blood, expressed as copies per milileter of blood plasma, by polymerase chain reaction or bDNA tests; undetectable is optional
