Dictatorship (autocracy)
|
a government controlled by one person or a small group of people in which the government seeus to control all aspects of social and economic life.

Oligarchy
|
any system of government in which a small group holds power. Oligarchies often rule like a dictator although in rare circumstances there may even be elected officials in this system.

constitutional monarchy
|
monarchs share power with elected officials and often mainly serve as ceremonial leaders in their government.

Democracy
|
Any system of government in which rule is by the people. Democracy is where people elect representatives and give them responsibility and power to control a government. Not every democracy is a republic.

Republic
|
Democracy in which the voters hold sovereign power. This means you cannot have a monarch in charge even if they only hold a ceremonial position.

|
Theocracy
|
Government by divine guidance or by officials who are regarded as divinely guided. In many theocracies, government leaders are members of the clergy and the state's legal system is based on religious law.

State
|
Political community with defined territory, organized government, and the power to make and enforce their own rules.

|
Nation
|
A large group of people united by common bonds of race, custom, language, etc.

Nation-state
|
Combine the previous two and you get a nation nation-state.

The force theory
|
Using the force of one person or a group to control an area.
|

The evolutionary theory
|
The belief that the state developed an early family. The primitive family of which one was the head thus government.

|
The Divine Right theory
|
The belief that God created the state and that God had given those a royal birth a "divine right" to rule. The people had to obey their ruler as they would God. Oposition was considered sinful and treason.

The social contract theory
|
A state organized by various philosophers and beliefs held by contract.
