What was the Commonwealth?

It was when England was ruled by a Republic following the end of the Second English Civil War and the trial and execution of Charles I.

Who was Oliver Cromwell?

He rose from the middle ranks of English society to be Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.

What was life like underneath Cromwell's rule?

Dancing, gambling, Christmas, theatres and pubs were banned, as they were sinful. If boys were caught playing football on a Sunday, they would be whipped. Swearing resulted in high fine, and those who kept swearing were sent to prison. Colourful dresses and make up were banned. He split England into 11 areas, each being ruled by generals. Eventually, the population were tired of having ruled strengthed upon them.

What was Charles II like?

He pursued a policy of political tolerance and power - sharing. He loved religious toleration (Catholic). He had many illegitimate children with various mistresses, and became an absolute ruler.

The Great Plague.
