Why was the USA worried about Cuba?
-> The USA owned many of Cuba's businesses and the leader before the revolution, Batista, did what ever the Americans told,him too. However, Fidel Castro lead a revolt in 1959 and the Americans believed he was a communist. -> The USA was worried because Cuba was only 90 miles off the American coast and believed that communism would also spread throughout the Caribbean. As a result, President Kennedy stopped buying Cuban Sugar and banned all trade with Cuba hoping it would force Castro out. Castro found help through the USSR where they would swap cyan sugar for soviet oil and machinery.
Why was Cuba worried about the USA?
-> The attempt to overthrow Castro was called the Bay of Pigs invasion and this involved 1,400 Cuban exiles of whom were trained by the CIA, to overthrow the communists so Cuba could have an American leader. However, this failed.
What was the Role of the USSR?
-> Castro feared another American attack so wanted more help from the soviets. Khrushchev was happy to help and he built missile sites in Cuba. This meant that the soviets could now reach the USA with missiles. With the U2 spy,plane photos, this caused the Cuban missile crisis.
