Jeffersonian "Revolution of 1800"
1800 Jefferson defeated Adams for the Presidency by a vote of 73 electoral votes to 65; believed his mission was to return to original spirit of the Revolution and the ideals of the republic, revolutionary that the transfer of powers between two opposing political parties took place in a peaceful fashion
Jefferson's changes to Federalist policies
Congress passed a new naturalization law in 1802 which restored the residence requirement from 14 years back to 5, persuaded Congress to repeal Hamilton's excise tax, reduced national debt and balanced the federal budget
Judicial review
passed Judiciary Act of 1801 which created sixteen new federal judgeships and other judicial offices
Jefferson's military policies
dramatically reduce the military establishment, accomplish more through "peaceful coercion" than military force
Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase
Jefferson realized that having the French in possession of Louisiana posed a real military threat to the U.S., French foreign minister offered to sell all of Louisiana to the U.S. and treaties were signed on April 30, 1803 ceding all of Louisiana for about $15 million
British seizure of American ships and sailors
in 1806, the U.S. found itself caught in the middle between two opposing powers, Britian issued a series of Orders in Council which closed European ports under French control to all foreign shipping, including American, Napoleon ordered the seizure of all merchant ships
impressment- the forcible enlistment of U.S. to serve on British ships
