ALABAMA, BIRMINGHAM |
March lead by MLK in April 1963. He knew Birmingham was V.RACIST and that they had links to the KKK. He wanted to gain sympathy by provoking them. MLK was arrested and Bull Connor set fire hoses and dogs onto the crowds which included children. This gained the campaign a lot of sympathy and peoples attitudes started to change. |

Washington and Alabama Marches Civil Rights BIll 1964 The face of the campaign Non-violence gained sympathy 125 schools name after him Some felt he ignored issues like poverty and didn't focus enough on the North. Some became frustrated with the lack of violence believing that it was slowing down the campaign. |

Inspired and energised young people to not be disillusioned by their poor treatment. Key role in the Black Power movement and the notion 'proud to be black'. He also focussed wpork in the south and the North contrasting wtih MLK. He inspired other minority groups. However, some felt his violence undermined MLKs efforts and that he was causing death and arrests. |

Kennedy: forced to deal with civil rights and in September 1962 made a speech saying that he was totally commited to civil rights campaign Johnson: Unpleasent but persuasive and got republicans to vote for blacks |

FREEDOM SUMMER 1964 |
people felt free given the new laws adn over 400,000 registered to vote. Campaigners targeted specific areas where segregation was high such as Mississippi where the voting rate was below 6.2%. 30 freedom schools set up with over 3000 students. |

PHILADELPHIA Church INCIDENT!! |
21 June 1964 3 civil rights workers were sent to investigate a bombing of a freedom church - 2 white, 1 black. They were arrested as they entered the village for speeding and then released into an angry mob. Their bodies found 6 weeks late. The whites had been shot and the Black man had been beaten. This hit headline news and sparked a lot of support from whites who sympathised with the two white men who were shot! |

SELMA |
MLK chose to hold a march in Selma because discrimination was severe and only 335 blacks voted of a population of 30,000. They marched without MLK for 54 miles and were seriously abused. People called it BLOODY SUNDAY and the TV coverage shocked America. On the 15th March Johnson pledged his support for Selma and created a new BIll which initiated 122000 more to vote |
