What was America's original position in the war, and why did they change?
-America practiced isolationism after WWI
-Series of Neutrality Acts passed 1930
-FDR found it difficult to remain neutral, but buckled under political pressure

-German Offensive=Soviets stay neutral (pact with Stlalin and Hitler)

-France=Germans crossed Maginot Line by invading Belgium, and invade France and defeat, set up French gov. in exile
-Britain=German bombers pound London, British Royal Air Force fought back successfully, bombing continues but invasion called off

-Cash and Carry Policy=Nations at war can buy weapons from US, but they have to pay for them with cash and pick them up

-Iwo Jima=A critical to US as a base, was the most defended spot, biggest death toll in Pacific war at that point, direct line to Japan, only 200 Japanese survived
-Okinawa=US marines invaded Okinawa, fierce opposition, 110,000 Japanese died, destroyed Japan's defenses

What was some discrimination going on in the 40s?
-Randolph/Farmer=demands for prez. to get AAs equal access to military jobs and wanted to end segregation in army and federal gov. Said he would march on Washington, but didn't have because FDR agreed to the 1st demand. Considered father of Civil Rights movement, Farmer founded CORE
-Zoot suit riots=Mexican-Americans young leaders subject to violence. Said they were stealing resources, jobs in war. Riots were mostly put down (response, improved housing and others)
