Hemisphere
Half a sphere. Equator divides North ans South. Prime Meridian divides East and West.
Equator
An imaginary line that circles around the earth and separates the Northern hemisphere from Southern Hemisphere. The line is equidistant from the north and South Pole.
Scale
Is the relationship between distance on a map and actual distance on the earth.
Longitude
An imaginary line that runs north to south around the globe but gives the location of a place east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Inset
A small graphic representation like a map set within a larger map.
Thematic Map
A map that shows information om a special theme. It is like a map for an amusement park or a subway.
Prime meridian
An imaginary line of longitude that measures 0 degrees and runs through Greenwich, England. It separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
Legend
An explanatory list of the symbols on a map or chart.
Map projection
Ways of showing the round surface of earth onto a flat surface of a map.
Latitude
An imaginary line that runs east to west around the globe and gives the location of a place north or south of the equator.
Mercator's Projection
Was the first map made by German cartographer Mercator. The advantages are that the shapes of the continents are accurate but the sizes are not.
Peter's Projection
Made by German cartographer named Peters. It is the second map. The advantages are thahthe sizes are accurate compared to each other but the shapes are stretched.
Goode's interrupted Projection
Third map made by Goode's. the advantage is that it shows little distortion of size or shape. The disadvantage is that areas of the world are split into sections making it difficult to calculate distances. Some pieces of the map are missing.
Robinson Projection
It is the fourth map made by a cartographer from America named Robinson. The size shape and distance is accurate. It is the map used mostly today. It is a good compromise of all the other three projections.
