Crozat took over the management of Louisiana for a period of 15 years. he wanted to make a personal fortune and planned to use his position and authority as proprietor to accomplish the goal.

4. in the beginning Crozat had volunteer settlers. they soon because unhappy. afterwards, Crozat brought anyone he could lay his hands on. this includes orphans, thieves, murderer, and debtors, who often made excellent citizens. Nethertheless, the crime rate rose. It was not a good beginning.

Los adaes was a spanish fort built near natchitoches to moniter french. fort rosalie, named for wife of Duc de Pontchatrain, was located on the Mississippi to keep an eye on the Natchez indians-the most warlike tribe in the area.
why did crozat fail in his louisiana venture?
Crozat failed because he was interested only i waht he could gain. his monopolies did not encourage competition in business; his trade goods were cheaply made and over priced. Spanish markets were closed to him. No one had money to buy the slaves he imported. he did not make friends the indians of the area. he did not encourage fishing and agriculture.
when was Nouvelle Orleans established? by whom? describe the controversy.
New orleans was established in 1718 by bienville who chose the site, even though he was told the land was unsuitible for a city. it was low, subject to flooding, a diesease-ridden. Bienville had fallen in love with the site as an 18 year-old boy.
Discuss john law, his contributions to louisiana and the company of the west.
the company of the west, chartered in 1717 was to handled the affairs of louisiana and illinois territories. it had the same powers as crozat but could also name the govenor for the territories. the head of the company was john law, who sold stock in the company to finance it. law was a con man who advertised louisiana all over europe as a land of milk and honey. stockholders were promised land and quick riches for theur unvestment.when settlers realized that they had been lied to, they sent gloomy reports home and fewer settlers would agree to come over. law then resorted to emptying debtors jails and orpahn asylums and even kidnapping peaople off the streets to fill his yearly quota of settlers. people in france began to hate the name Louisiana. Many indentured servants came to Lousiaiana-- most from Switzerland and Germany. they became some of the most productive citizens.

13. john law had become comptroller general (treasuer) of france. he continued to oversell stock in the company of the west. the value of the stock because inflated-- the mississippi bubble. he began a system of paper money, which soon became worthless. the banks could not honor drafts and soon collapsed along with the company of the west. people holding stock in the company of the were bankrupted. john law, disguised as a women, managed to escape from france.
describe the attack on pensacola.
when war broke out between france and spain, pensacola (spanish fort) was considered a threat to louisiana. bienville attacked and took pensacola but did not have room to house the prisoners. he sent them to havana on french ships, which were captured by the spanish and to recapture pensacola. bienville once again took pensacola. the fort was returned to the spanish by peace treaty at the end of the war.

during the time the french attacked pensacola, soldiers from natchitoches attacked los adaes. the garrison was small. during the batte, which lasted only a few minutes, the only casualties were riders who were thrown when frightened chicken cause their horses to buck. the war was takin without a shot being fired.
discuss the war of spanish succession.
the war of spanish succession occurred when the king of spain died without leaving a direct heir. the closest relative was philip, grandson of the king of france, who was already far to powerful to suit his neighbors. the war ended, and philip was named king- provided louis XIV promised to stay out of spanish politics. [of course, louis, did not honor his promise.]
desribe the lives of indentured servants.
indentured servants sold themselves for a period of 7 years. in return for passage to the new world, they agreed to work off the price. any monies they accumulated outside outside their indenture was their own and could be used to purchase their freedom or saved for use after the indenture was satisfied. many saved enough enough money to buy land later on and settle. there were both black and white indentured servants. it was much easier for white indentured servants to gain realease than the blacks.
discuss the reason for unusual livestock laws of this period and who was affected by them.
the killing or maiming of domestic anmals, (cows, sheep, goats) were punishable by extreme measures (high fines and/or even death) because these aniamls were rare and valuable. all people, regardless of status, were affected by these laws.
