When did Karl Marx live?
He was born on May 5th 1818 and he died in 1883.
How influential were Marx’s ideas at the time Rius’ book was
published [1976]? What about today?
• He seems to have been influential enough for people to want to popularize him at this time.
• Rius also says that “ 1/3 of humanity pracices communism while the remaining 2/3 argue about it.”
• Rius also compares marx to a Bible or Koran. He also says that many of marxes ideas are used today such as social security, unions, scholorships, and much more(if only indirectly)
• marx was involved in many things which are studied today such as travel, economy, history ,human relations, and even more.

• As a young man marx went to Bonn University to study law, but he apparently didn’t focus very much on his studies. He earned a reputation for philandering and got into a fight over a woman.
• After this he went to Berlin to finish his studies.
• After he finished his studies he went back to Bonn in search of a teaching job, but because of his previous antics ,he was turned down.
Who was Frederick Hegel? What was his philosophy of history?
• He was a German philosopher whom Marx studied.
• Hegal wanted to justify the idea of God.
• He suggested a form of Pantheism
• Pantheism is the philosophical doctorine that everything is divine
• Hegal belived that god was more of an invention of the community rather than the community being an invention of a diety.
• He did not believe in the immortal soul
• The church and state felt threatened and made sure that Hegal diidn’t spread his ideas among the people and he said that his ideas were just philosophy and that people should continue to follow their religion
• He also said that humanity only progresses after war or other conflicts. Peace doesn’t make for progress.
