U.S. VS. NORTHERN SECURITIES
In 1902, the Federal Government filed a suit against Northern Securities and found them guilty of violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. Northern Securities was mandated by the government to be dissolved.
ANTHRACITE COAL STRIKE
In 1902, coal miners went on strike, causing the price to increase and supply to decrease. Society collectively suffered from the lack of fuel, so Roosevelt intervened by threatening to nationalize coal mines.
DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AND LABOR
The Bureau of Corporation - Given the authority to study the activities of interstate corporation. If they disagreed with a company's practice, they could file an anti-trust suit. Equaled the end of free market capitalism.
HEPBURN ACT
ICC is given the power to investigate the business records of railroads. The ICC could set rates, and extended government control over the pipeline, all freight companies, bridges, ferries.

NEW NATIONALISM
A more expansive and intrusive role for government with particular authority situated in the executive branch. Wants a more power government to regulate social and economical welfare of the US for the greater good.
ROOSEVELT'S INFLUENCE ON THE 1910 PRIMARY
Roosevelt campaigned for those Republicans advocating the leftist movement. This led to a split in the party and forced a breach which caused the Republicans to lose.
1912 CAMPAIGN
Roosevelt was against Taft for the presidency. In the end, Taft's people claims he has more delegates than needed for the nomination.
REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
Roosevelt's people pleaded their case to the Republican National Committee, but only received a small percentage of the delegates they were contesting. This led to chaos and violence between Roosevelt and Taft's people. Roosevelt attended the convention. Inevitably, Taft won and Roosevelt left the Republican Party.

Wilson got control of the government by controlling banking; he created the Federal Reserve (Glass-Owen Federal Reserve Act), and created the 16th Amendment for income tax. FTC investigate unfair trading
WILSON'S ATTITUDE TOWARD THE CONSTITUTION
Wilson had little use for the Constitution; believed he was the right hand of God and anything that countered his rulings was working against divine will.

Created federal land banks to give low interest loans to farmers

Subtreasury Plan; Government will provide storage facilities to farmers to store there crops until the price rises. They could also get a loan and pay it back once they sold their crops.

WILSON'S ATTITUDE ON RACE
Tolerated segregation; allowed Federal departments to segregate its black employees and in the south, demoted or fired black employees.
