intro

World war teo lasted from 1939-1945 the coalition government took steps to improve Social Welfare. The gov asked william Bevridge to write a report on Britains biggest social problems. Bevridge came up with 5 giant problems: Squalor, want, ignorance, idelness, disease. This essay will argue that Labour partly met the needs of the British people from 'cradle to grave', Want was the most successful with Squalor, disease and idleness being less so

para 1

The Labour reforms to deal with the giant of Want seen the introduction of the Family Allowance of 1946 which gave 25p to mothers with 2 or more kids which gave women economic power which was unlikely at the time. This also saw National Assistance 1948 acted as a safety net for those who werent applicable for NI.

However these benefits didnt raise the cost of living qnd so many people ended up in poverty. They were also not effectiveas many rich people didnt approve as they thought it wouldnt do them good.

para 2

The Labour govt helped deal with the giant of Squalor by introducing the new towns act 1946 which saw 13 new towns be built: these housing successfully took people out of slums into mew council houses. They also vowed to build 200,000 homes a year which would have been the first time people in britain had electricity and indoor toilets. On the other hand they didnt end up building 200,000 houses a year qnd actually the Tory gov of 51 built more houses than Labour. Furthermore the towns built were soulless and lacked basic necessities.

para 3

They delt with Idelness by nationalising key industries like railways and coal to help manage the economy. The Beveridge report found that nationalising the industries would meant that unemployment wouldnt drop past 3%...Labour smashed this though and reached 2.5%. OTOH historians believe Labours changes were less effective as construction workers began rebuilding destroyed towns across Britain. Furthermore world demand picked back up and there was a labour shortage due to the war anyway.

para 4

The Labour g9vernemnt helped british people cope with diseas througj introducing the NHS. This meant everyone in Britain was entitled to maternity, dental+eye care for free. Thsi was deemed successful as prescriptions rose 2mil per month to 13.5mil per month in sept 1945. They also had 5mil glasses jn the first year, 8.5mil dental cases and infant mortality decreased drastically thanks to the NHS. However succes is limited due to costs for dental and eye car being too expensive. Historians also report that the working class recieved inferior service.

CONCLUSION

To conclude, the labour govt did not meet the needs of British people from cradle to the grave as many of the changes as costs were too high and many plans got demanded.

On the one hand the plans to cope with idelenss and Want were partly succesful as the NA A cave women economic power and the Labour party succesfully kept unemployment under 5%.

OTOH the labour govt were less successful in helping the Brits as freedental and eye care were abandoned and they failed to build 200,000 houses per year.
