-Charles Gordon was Governor General from 1877 to 1880 -In 1881 a Mahdist rebellion under Muhammad Ahmad began. -By 1885 Khartoum was overrun and Gordon was killed. Gladstone sought no retaliation. -In 1896 British rule was re-asserted under Salisbury. Victory was decisive after the Battle of Omdurman in 1898 led by Kitchener. |
