1919

Treaty of Versailles: Br, Fr and USA. Colonies of defeated nations divided up Br and Fr. Germany no longer allowed heavy artillery, army reduced to 100,000 men. Germany accepted blame for starting war. Reparations = £6600 million to allies.

1922: WAN

Washington Naval Agreement: Britain France USA and Japan signed an agreement whereby they agreed to limit the size of then navies. Considerable British opposition.

1922: ToR

Treaty of Rapello: signed between Germany and the USSR to reestablish normal relations cancelled all financial claims. Strengthen economic and military ties. Slightly concerned western allies.

1924

The Dawes Plan: USA lended $2.5 billion to Germany. Germany used increased tax revenues to pay reparations to France $2 billion. France pay back war loans to USA $2.6 billion.

1925

The Locarno pact: Germany's western frontiers w/ France and Belgium accepted and guaranteed by Britain and Italy. Stressemann didn't accept eastern boundaries.

1926

Germany join League of Nations: this was a result of the 1925 Locarno pact.

1928

The Kellogg Briand pact: 15 nations including France Germany Britain and USA. Renounced war as legitimate weapon for nation state. Promised not to use war to resolve "disputes or conflicts which may arise among them". Parties failing to abide were denied of benefits.

1929

The young plan: new schedule of German reparations payments to be spread over 59 years. Germans also received new American loan. Britain and France withdraw occupancy from the Rhineland.

1930

Britain and France withdraw troops from Rhineland: 5 years ahead of schedule.

1929

The Wall Street crash: Britain = steel production increased by 50%. US loans ceased. Protective tariffs on goods.


Germany = had loaned £9000 million paid back in reparations. 12 mill unemployed. Germany economy in depression.


Japan = silk prices reduced to 1/3. Trade slowed. Unemployment rose.

1931

Manchuria: the Japanese claimed that Chinese soldiers had sabotaged the Manchurian railway in Korea, which Japan controlled. Japan attacked and brutally conquered Manchuria.

1935

The Anglo-German Naval Agreement: Germany was to have the right to build up to 35% of britains capital ships. This agreement was signed without prior discussion with France or Italy which damaged the stresa front. Britain, by sanctioning a much larger German navy than was permitted by the treaty of Versailles seemed to be condoning Germany's rearmament.

1935: a

Abyssinia: Mussolini wanted to take over abyssinia (one of the last countries in Africa that sas free from European control. French, anxious to keep on good terms bc of German threat, promised Mussolini a free hand in Abyssinia. Britains silence in mussolinis view implied consent. However as summer progressed Britain made it clear that it would not approve of this. This angered Mussolini. Public opinion in Britain was strongly opposed to the invasion. British gov took a moral stand and condemned the invasion, supported LoN action against Italy. France followed.

1935: H-L Pact

The Hoare-Laval Pact: the League sanctions had limited effect on Italy's war effort. British and French foreign ministers Hoare and Laval met in Paris to discuss the Abyssinian situation. They proposed a compromise settlement = Italy would receive about one third on Abyssinia. Abyssinia would have access to the Red Sea. The pact was leaked and there was a storm within the press which led to the cabinet abandoning the pact.
