Twelve Tables
- The laws were engraved on tablets known as the twelve tables. They were then placed in the middle of the town. The Plebeians demanded them to put them up.

- Carthage had a general Hannibal who was now to be one of the greatest generals of all time.

- Plebeians were farmers and other workers
- They were majority of the population

- A republic was made up of the senate, assemblies, and magistrates(consuls)
- The senate was the oldest most power
Roman Empire
- What they had after cessar
- A dictator (or emperor) rules the government
- They still have the three branches, but the leader makes all of the decisions
Consuls
- After the king had died there were two consuls elected every two years
- The consuls were advised by the senate and they also had the power to veto each other
- This is the beginning of a system we use known as checks and balances
Censors
- Registered citizens by wealth(census)
- Appointed senates
- Over saw the moral conduct of citizens (censorship)
Assemblies
Assemblies were groups of citizens
That sent tribunes (messengers) to Rome
Punic Wars
- There were three Punic wars between Carthage and Rome
- Rome won
Augustus Caesar
- Caessars nephew and heir (means he inherited his money and job)
Slaves
Had any job, depended on their masters
Usually captives from war
Partial Citizens
Partial citizens (people that were conquered by Rome) could marry and own property but they could not vote
Zealots
Jews that were afraid that Rome wanted to weaken their faith by making them believe in more then one god.

Anyone who dies (or suffers) for their beliefs

How did the Punic War cause problems for Rome?
Because when soldiers came home from the Punic war they came to find that their farms were ruined or so most of them sold their land and moved to the cities.
This caused the rich to become richer and the poor became poorer
Who killed Julius Caesar and why?
The senators killed Caesar on the senate floor because he reduced the power of the senate.
What was the difference between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire?
Republic had three branches (senate was most power)
Empire had dictator/emperor that ruled everyone
What was life like in ancient Rome?
-The rich often had two homes country and city homes which both include running water and baths the rich thought It was an honor to eat exotic food such as jelly fish and boiled ostrich (this showed wealth)

-The daily life for commoner’s people mostly ate simple meals of bred cheese and fruit and they lived in crowded apartments made of wood.
How did Christianity change Rome?
It changed Rome because it appealed to all people rich or poor it also gave hope for forgiveness or sins and promised life after death.
Why were good roads and bridges so important to the Roman Empire?
