How did Oliver Cromwell come to be the leader of England in the 1650s?

Cromwell became Lord High Protector after the English Civil War which was between forces loyal to King Charles I who were called Cavaliers and those loyal to the Parliament who were called Roundheads. In 1649, the Parliament won the war, thanks to Cromwell and the New Model Army he trained and led into battle.

Explain one way in which reports of the 1641 rebellion in Ireland were exaggerated by the time they reached London.

When the 1641 Catholic rebellion occurred in Ulster, it was estimated that around 4,000 Protestants were killed, but when the news reached England, it was said that more than 100,000 had been massacred.

Explain one reason why the Old English families decided to join with the Gaelic Irish in the Confederation of Kilkenny.

They joined the Confederation of Kilkenny because they were fed up with English attempts to force them to reject the Catholic religion. However, the news and rumours that spread across England were that the Catholics had committed attacks on Protestants, slaughtering women and children.
