Reichstag Fire

In late February 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire, supposedly by a Dutch Communist, Van der Leubbe. He was found near the building with a box of matches in his coat pocket. Some historians believe that the fire was set by the Nazis in an attempt to cause the German people to lose faith in the Communist movement. The motive was to extinguish their greatest threat.

Emergency Decrees

February 1933- After the burning of the Reichstag building, Hitler introduced the 'Law for the Protection of the People and the State.' This was passed by President Hindenburg, who only agreed after being emotionally blackmailed using his hatred of communists. The law stated that all civil rights were to be revoked, censorship was to be introduced and that Freedom of speech and press were to be revoked also.
