Roanoke

The first English colony in the Americas. However, after a year they had run out of food and were quarreling with neighboring Native American tribes and when an English Ship arrived they sailed home. Later, they sent John White an original colonist back to Roanoke with a new group of settlers. When supplies ran low he went back to England but at the time they were at war with Spain and did not come back until three years later. When he arrived, he found the colonists left and someone carved the word CROATOAN the name of a nearby island. No other trace of the colonists remained and to this day it remains a mystery.

The water was unhealthy and colonists started catching malaria from mosquitoes. The council of 13 men did little to help but argue among each other. Soon, the colony was near failure before a colonist named John Smith began to take charge. He set up stern rules and actually helped the colony and tensions with Native Americans helped when John Rolfe married Pocahontas daughter of the chief Powhatan.
