5 abuses of the Church |
Absenteeism, Nepotism, Pluralism, Simony, Sale of indulgences. |

Absenteeism |
Bishops and Priests were absent from their parishes and dioceses for long periods of time. Many people might have gone for weeks or months without seeing a priest, hearing mass or receiving the sacraments. |

Pluralism |
Absenteeism was sometimes linked to pluralism. When a priest for bishop controlled a number of parishes or dioceses and became very wealthy and influential. |

Simony |
The buying of church positions. Many bishops, archbishops and cardinals bribed their way into these positions by payment of money and land |

Nepotism |
Placing relatives and friends in important church positions |

Sale of indulgences |
People believed that if they died with sin on their soul they would spend time of penance in a spiritual place called purgatory as they could not be admitted to heaven if they had not paid for their sins. The church led Christians to believe that they could reduce the amount of time they or their loved ones spent in purgatory. The church accepted money in return for the forgiveness of sin, these were called indulgences. Christians believed they could buy their way put of purgatory and into heaven. |

In germany, the church owned 1/3 of the land. Many were jealous of this wealth. Princes and kings wanted this wealth to build up their countries |

The counter - reformation |
The catholic church responded to the reformation in a number of ways: 1. The council of trent - a long meeting of bishops, cardinals held in italy. It recognised the corruption in the church and it ordered that: - simony, nepotism and pluralism were banned - bishops were obliged to live in their dioceses, endeing absenteeism - indulgences could only be earned by parayer and faith - all priests were to be fully and properly trained in seminaries (special universities) - books that disagreed with the teachings of the church should be banned. 2.
