|
Son of Marwan I (Mu’awiya’s cousin). Problems in the empire with unity. Ibn al-Hanafiyya claims to be heir to ‘Ali, and he is pronounced Mahdi by Shi’a leadership. Malik creates numerous reforms. Creates a standard coinage, borrowed from Byzantine and Iranian coins. Administrative paperwork arabacized, forcing others to learn language. Created a paid army, supported by taxes. Built the Dome of the Rock.
