NAVIGATION AND TRADE ACTS
Regulated trade between Britian an colonists, forbad trade with any other countries or indians, made to help bring Britain out of debt, some colonials smuggled goods from other countries.
FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
British vs. French and indians.
British won.
French gave British lots of land.
British went into debt and clamped onto colonies afterwards.
WRITS OF ASSISTANCE
British sent custums officials w/ writs of assistance (general search warrants) to search for smuggled goods anywhere, even in homes.
7 Colonial leaders protested the laws.
BRITISH ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES
advantages- only had to defend coastal region, strongest and largest navy in world, population 15x larger than france, and allied with Iroquios Indians.
disadvantages- government was little cooperative, inexperienced army.
BOYCOTTS
People refsed to buy English merchandise, Colonial merchants would not unload goods from British ships, this boycott hurt British trade, some british merchants and workers joined colonials in boycott.
FRENCH ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES
advantages- Army was well trained, govern. strong and unified, strategic forts, many indian allies.
disadvantages- population sparce, widely scattered settlements.
PEACE OF PARIS
french gave Britain all her claim to all the territory east of the mississippi river except New Orleans.
Spain also gave British Florida.
ALBANY PLAN OF UNION
made by Benjamin Franklin, rejected by King and by colonists, made to unite colonies, rough draft for Declaration of Independance.
SONS OF LIBERTY
Groups appeared all over colonies because of Stamp Act,group organized and help rallies to protest Stamp Act, often went to intimidation and violence to prove their point about stamp act.
BOSTON MASSACRE
March 5, 1770, boston massachuesetts, Men crowded and taunted 7 soldies by throwing snowballs and stones at them, troops fired into mob killing 5 people and wounding six others, No one knows who gave the command for the British to fire.
COMITTEE OF CORRESPONDENCE
Samuel Adams urged Boston to adopt this, 80 Massachusetss followed Boston's example, organized to promote opposition to Britain, became important in altering colonists the British threats on liberty throughout colonies.
STAMP ACT
1764, sought to gain even more money for Britain, Instead of affecting imported goods this act affected colonial buisness, Made colonial buisnessmen and lawyers to purchase special stamps and place them on items that were taxed, Caused the Stamp Act Congress, British finally stopped taxes a year later.
SUGAR ACT
April 1764, Parliment passed Sugar Act, sought to gain Britian more money to get out of debt, put taxes on imported goods such as sugar, molasses, coffe, silks, and indigo.
Coloniasts imprted these gods from the West Indies.
PROCLAMATION OF 1763
King forbade colonial settlemnt west of the Appalachian Mountains.
British did not want colonials to trade with other countries or indiands.
FORT DUQUENSE
English fougt french in small battle here and lost.
french fort, english then conquered it and became fort pitt, then became Pittsburg.
TOWNSHEND ACTS
Change in leadership of Parliment brought renewed efforts to tax colonists, this act made in 1767, placing new taxes on items such as glass, paper, lead, and tea, Colonists protested and boycotted British goods once again to make this go away.
