Who is Hammurabi?
(ca. 1792 – 1750 BC) United Mesopotamia under his 43 year reign of Babylon
Why is Hammurabi’s Code significant as a first?
Not the first code of laws, but it’s the first laws that held the king accountable.
From whom did Hammurabi supposedly receive the code of laws?
The god Shamash
What is cuneiform and what was it used for?
Wedge-shaped writing system, used for trade and figuring out money; first widespread writing system in ancient world
Are Hammurabi’s laws just compared to modern law?

The punishments are harsh by modern standards. Many offenses resulted in death or disfigurement (for example, an eye for an eye). The laws do require the accused and accuser to be allowed to present evidence. Each offense has a very specific punishment, with no room for excuses.

Arab-Israeli Conflict
A conflict between the Israelis and the Arabs in the Middle East. The United Nations established Israel, a nation under control of Jews, in Palestine in the late 1940s, in territory inhabited by Palestinian Arabs. Israel was placed in the midst of four Arab nations — Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt — and the presence of Israel has led to constant contention between Israel and the Arab world. Both the Israelis and the Arabs claim land in Palestine as theirs by ancestral rights, and war has periodically broken out between them.
