Red scare
A wave of anticommunist, antiforeign, and antilabor hysteria that started at the end of WWI. Resulted in the deportation of many alien residents and the violation of the civil liberties of many of its victims.
National Orgins Act of 1924
Established a quota system to regulate the influx of immigrants to America. Restricted the new immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and Asia. Reduced the annual total of immigrants.
Flapper
Women that rebelled against Victorian restraints. H.L Mencken devloped the term flapper image that was portrayed in the work of John Held Jr.
Prohibition
The ban of the manufacture, sale, and transpotation of alcoholic beverages in the U.S.The 18th amendment adopted in 1919.
Volstead Act
Implemented prohibition. Effective January 16, 1920.
Scopes trial
AKA monkey trial. 1924, scopes was on trail for teaching Darwinian evolution in defiance of the TN state law. Found guilty and paid a $100 fine.
Great Depression
Followed the crash of the stock market in 1929. It was a shock to Americans because of the prosperity they had seen in the 1920s. Hoover believed in the trickle down method and did not want to give any handouts. So many Americans blamed him for the depression.
Bonus Army
June of 1932 20 thousand WWI vets marched on Washington DC to demand immediate payment for their adjusted compensation bonuses. Congressed refused and they were forcibly removed from encampment. Public realstions disaster for hoover.
New Deal
Platform that FDR ran on. It was applied to his program of legislation passed to combat the Great Depression.
FDIC
A federal guarantee of savings bank deposits initially of up to $2500 raised to $5000 in 1934. today it's $100,000.
WPA
emergency relief for the jobless. Established in 1935 and it was the final attempt to help the jobless.
Axis powers
The alliance btwn Italy, Germany, and Japan. During WWI.
Allies
The alliance btwn the U.S., Britian and Russia.
Dday
June 6, 1944. The day the Allied troops crossed the English channel and opened a second front in western europe during WWII. The "D" means disembarkation or to leave a ship and go ashore.
Manhattan Project
Franklin Roosevelt authorized a group to build an atomic bomb and finish it before the Germans did. It was named for the Corps of Engineers district originally in charge, spent $2 billion dollars and produced weapns that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
