Why was there a war in Korea?

The invasion was the West's attempt to "contain" communism, in a hope that it would not spread to other countries. President Truman did not seek a formal declaration of war, officially America's presence in Korea amounted to no more than police action.

What was the cold war?

The Democratic and Capitalist West feared and distrusted communism.


The WWII allies grew anxious of the U.S.S.R


U.S.S.R controlled most of East Europe and Eurasia.


Domino theory, this communisation was seen as a threat to America and the free west.


War of ideologies, Capitalism vs. Communism. This “war”, though having no battles, was very real. In the event of a war against the U.S.S.R, more casualties could have been sustained than the whole of WWII.

What is the Vietnam War?

The Vietnam War first began in 1959.


Vietnam had been split into two, with a communist government in the north under Ho Chi Minh and a democratic government in the south under Ngo Dinh Diem. Ho launched a guerilla campaign in South Vietnam, to reunite the country through war. The United States, seeking to stop the spread of communism, trained the Army of the Republic of Vietnam



To many the conflict was seen as an indirect war between America and the U.S.S.R.

In nov. 1964, the Menzies Government introduced conscription called 'NATIONAL SERVICE'. All men had to register at age 20.

What is Napalm?

Opposition to the War.

Many people came to see the war as not Australia’s business, or that the war was a lost cause so “why bother?”. Or they viewed the war as immoral and wrong. A lot of the movement came in the form of anti-conscription.



The anti-war movement came in three broad stages;



-early peaceful and ineffectual protest.


-short lived militant and more violent phase.



-the nationwide, decentralised moratorium movement.
