Who was Ferdinand Magellan?

Ferdinand Magellan was the son of a Portuguese nobleman. Before setting off on his first major voyage, he had acquired extensive experience, having sailed along the coast of Africa and into Asia. King Charles I of Spain became Magellan's patron for his trip around the globe.

Name Magellan's ships.

The Trinidad, the Santiago, the Concepcion, the Victoria and the San Antonio.

Describe Magellan's voyage along the coast of South America.

Magellan's fleet of ships set sail from Seville on the 20th of September 1519 carrying 270 men. During the winter months the fleet landed at Port St. Julian. On Easter Day 1520 the Spanish captains rose in mutiny against Magellan, in which he reacted ruthlessly by hanging one of the captains and abandoning another one on shore. On the 22nd of May 1520 the Santiago was wrecked about 100 kilometres from Port St. Julian. Before entering the Straits of Magellan the San Antonio deserted and went back to Spain with most of the supplies. An island to the south of the straits is called Tierra del Fuego ( The Land of Fire ). The island was called this because the natives lit fire on the land. A lot of Magellan's crew died because of scurvy from lack of fruit and vegetables. Juan Sebastian del Cano completed the circumnavigation of the globe after Magellan was killed in a local tribal warfare in the Philippines when a spear hit him in the face.
