Solon was a well-respected man who was made chief of Athens in 594. He made it law that no Athenian could be enslaved and freed all the previously enslaved Athenian and lifted their debt. |

Leader of the hill faction in Athens who in 564 took over the states central government. He took Athens out of their era of election and into a rule of Tyrants. |

City-Island Strategy |
revolutionary new military strategy in which Athens created a defense instead of invading the Peloponnesians. She created herself into an island state attracted the Peloponnesian's into the states walls and then fle. |

Sicilian Expedition |
The Athenian leader persuaded the state to take advantage of the conflict going on in Sicily and use it to bring them into the Athenian empire. This invasion ended up being a disaster for Athens but is significant because it introduced the ancient world to the new force of Syracuse |

was a war between the Athenians their allies and Sparta with many wins and losses for both sides. With the anti spartan alliance gaining momentum out of fear of their power the Persian empire persuaded the sides to make Peace allowing them to take over Ionia. |

King and ruler of Persia and the political necessity of shoring up his authority and imperial unity by proving military might. Significant because he created the battle that lead Alexander the great to begin advancing to domination. |
