Prehistoric

VIEW- Mental illness due to spirits in people’s head


TREATMENT- trepanning. Piercing skull to release spirits. Treat seizures, migraines, mental disorders

VIEW- Imbalance of different fluids or ‘humours’ in the body- blood, phlegm, black bile, yellow bile.


E.g. too much black bile - withdrawal/pessimism


Or too sensitive and emotional - too much phlegm.

Most ended up in workhouses, prisons or private ‘madhouses.’ Mainly run for profit. Paid to take family off their hands.

Legal and social changes.


Each region of the U.K. instructed by the government to care for their mentally ill in lunatic asylums.


Treatment of peace and games.


Mentally ill viewed as treatable and requiring compassion. Encouraged to rest.


20th century - electroconvulsive therapy, lobotomies-ECT. Medication, antipsychotic drugs.


TREATMENT- care in the community model. Asylums closed down and replaced by community mental health services.
