Pre-play

- Oedipus whole story

- Creon was acting as Regent because Oedipus’ sons were too young

- Polynices claimed he was elder son, Eteocles fought him so Poly left Thebes

- Poly went to Argos, married the king’s daughter, and gathered an army to wage war on Thebes

- Thebes won, two brothers killed each other

- Eteocles defended city so he got an honoured burial

- Poly threatened the city, so he did not

Big idea: Who is right?
- With history, Creon seems right

- Thebes was theocratic, Athens was democratic (the audience watching the play)

- Athens was trying to put loyalty to the city ahead of family at the time

- BUT Non-burial could spread pollution over land and often family was allowed to take the body later
