Simple Squamous Epithelium


one layer of flattened cells attached to basement membrane; found in lining of lumina of blood vessels, lung alveoli, body cavity linings

more than one layer of cells attached to basement membrane; found in skin epidermis, exposed layer of vagina, parts of digestive system

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

proximal convoluted tubule contains a brush border of free surface, distal one contains no free surface modification; found in tubing of nephron in kidney

pillar shaped cells; found in digestive, reproductive and respiratory system

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium

multiple layers of cells that touch basement membrane, but few reach free surface; found in the respiratory and reproductive systems
