What structure of the ear is shown above?

The external acoustic meatus

What forms Cerumen in the ear?

Secretions of the ceruminous and sebaceous glands.

Describe the structure of the tympanic membrane.

It is made up of connective tissue, covered externally by epidermis, and internally by the simple cuboidal epithelium of the mucosa of the middle ear cavity.

What are the epithelial linings of the middle ear and auditory ossicles?

Simple cuboidal and simple squamous epithelium respectively.

What is otitis media?

Inflammation of the middle ear due to viral it bacterial infection coming from the upper respiratory tract.

What is the name of the sensory regions in the different parts of the inner ear?

The maculae in the utricle and saccule, the cristae ampullares in the ampula of the semicircular duct, and the spiral organ of Corti in the cochlear duct.

Where is perilymph and endolymph created and drained?

Perilymph has an uncertain origin but is believed to be formed from either CSF or an ultrafiltration from perilymphatic blood capillaries. It drains into the subarachnoid spaces through the aqueduct of the cochlea. It is similar in composition to CSF and has very little protein. Endolymph is formed from the walls of the cochlear duct known as the "stria vascularis". It has a high concentration of K+ and a low conc. of Na+. It drains via the endolymphatic duct in the aqueduct of the vestibule, into the Venus sinus odd the posterior cranial fossa.

Describe the epithelium of the utricle and the saccule.

It is simple squamous, except at the maculae which are columnar neuroepithelium cells.

What is the kinocilium and stereocilia of the macula hair cells connected to basally and apically?

The cuticular plate and the otolithic membrane respectively. The cuticular plate is filled with actin and returns the cilia upright when bent. The otolithic membrane is a thick gelatinous membrane containing calcium carbonate and the protein otoliths (otoconia).

What is the result of overstimulation of the maculae and cristae ampullares?

Motion sickness and vertigo respectively.

What epithelium lines Reissner's membrane?

Simple squamous.

What structure is shown above?

The cochlea

What structure is shown above?

The organ of corti
