Gang and Task system
|
Gang System- a division of labor, it is the harsher one of the two. Used in the WEST INDIES AND CHESPEAKE. It was the most productive form of labor and was preferred on sugar plantations and it was very brutal and harsh. Slaves were divided into groups according to physical capabilities, and worked usually from early morning to late night and were supervised. They wanted maximum production out of this group and operated like an “assembly line”.
Task System- this division wasn’t as harsh. It was used in SOUTH CAROLINA AND GEORGIA. If they were finished with there set of task for the day they could rest or work on their own garden or other projects. Significance-illustrates the distinctions among the different regions of the Americas, the labor conditions of the slaves as well as the relationship between the slaves and the whites. |
